Providing your body with the necessary vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients it needs is a critical part of your overall health and fitness goals. The nutrition your supply to your body greatly affects how well you perform at school or work, how much energy you have, how your body functions, as well as your overall health and well being. And while the subject of nutrition can be a difficult one to navigate, there are a few nutrition basics that you can learn to help get you started towards a lifetime of healthy living.
First and foremost, try to eat a variety of foods. Different foods contain different types of nutrients—the more variety you have in your diet, the more different types of nutrients your body will have access to. Second, try to limit overly processed or sugary foods. While these foods may be good to eat, they lack the vital ingredients that your body requires to function properly. You don’t need to eliminate these foods completely, just try to eat them in moderation as part of your overall healthy diet. Third, don’t forget the importance of water. Other types of drinks are tasty and fun to drink, but try to get the majority of your liquid in the form of water—there is no substitute. And last, if you need a snack, try reaching for fruits and vegetables first. Fruits and vegetables are low in fat and calories and provide your body with the energy you need without added sugar or other ingredients that aren’t good for you.
