As any athlete knows, your nutritional requirements can be quite different from other, less active people. Because of the extra amount of energy you expend each day, you calorie requirements are different and you need to pay extra attention to the food you put into your body. In order to perform the best you can, you need to supply your body with the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that your body requires.
Athlete nutrition can be kind of tricky to do right. While your body will require extra calories to do what you are asking it do, those calories need to contain high levels of nutrients. If you are simply eating more junk calories, you are not helping your body. In fact, too many junk or empty calories will actually hinder your body from performing at its peak.
Another important factor for athlete nutrition is water consumption. Most Americans do not drink the amount of water they need each day. But for athletes, not drinking enough water can be especially detrimental. Increased activity increases loss of fluids, and if you are not replacing that fluid you may be putting your body at risk for injury or illness. Make sure to drink plenty of water before, after, and during your physical activity.
By taking some extra time in the day to focus on your special nutritional needs, athlete nutrition can be relatively simple to maintain. And when you are careful about providing your body with the fuel it needs, you’ll be better able to reach your athletic goals.
