According to the American College of Sports Medicine, aerobic exercise is “any activity that uses large muscle groups, can be maintained continuously, and is rhythmic in nature.” Basically, aerobic exercise is any activity that gets your heart rate going steadily over a certain period of time. In order to stay healthy and maintain a healthy weight, you should be participating in some sort of regular aerobic exercise. And while this doesn’t mean that you have to go running every day, you should set aside around thirty minutes each day to get your body moving.

To begin a program of regular aerobic exercise, start by choosing something you enjoy. If you love to be outdoors, take a brisk walk each day during your lunch break or after work. Other easy aerobic exercises can include cycling, jumping rope, stair climbing, dancing, skating, or swimming. By choosing something that you actually enjoy doing, you will be more likely to stick with a regular exercise program and enjoy getting the exercise you need.

Besides being a way to get in better shape or lose a little weight, regular aerobic exercise is a great way to relieve stress. By exercising your body, you are releasing a lot of pent up energy and stress that you may not get rid of otherwise. After a few weeks or even days of regular aerobic exercise, you will start to notice increased energy levels and a boost in your moods—regular exercise will benefit your emotional health as well.
